The husband and wife partnership of Charles and Ray Eames has proved to be one of the most succesful and influential creative collaborations of the 20th Century. Their post war furniture designs are still in production today and early examples of their work are now much sought after modern classics.
I regularly repair and reupholster original Eames designed chairs ranging from the Eames Lounge Chair (670) and ottoman (671) to the Lobby, Time Life, Soft Pad Chairs.
Various different manufacturers have held the licence to produce genuine models since the 1950's. Herman Miller in the USA, Hille of London and Vitra of Germany. I have worked on models produced by all of the above and I am familiar with the slight variations in design as the chair has evolved through the decades.

A London Architect asked us to reupholster and repad his original 1970's Eames for Herman Miller plywood and leather lounge chair as the leather had cracked and torn. It has been recovered in a luxurious soft black aniline leather which develops a lovely patina with age. A little extra padding was added when reupholstering the chair to match it as closely as possible to its original look and feel.
The customer from Surrey commented that: 'The initial delight at seeing my 35-year old Herman Miller chair reborn has not diminished in any way. In fact, having sat in it every day since delivery, I am astonished at how bad it had become and just how good it is now and instead of a split and tired old relic confined to a little used corner, it is restored to its original prominent place. I think the aniline leather is even better than the original, being flatter in colour with less shine and the upholstery detail is as good as the original.'
These much loved pieces have often been in families for many years and over the years I can reupholster them in high quality leather or fabric of your choosing. I have a large selction of leather colours and types to choose from all of an equal quality to the original.
Restoration can include repolishing the shells and replacing the polypropylene backs and often the shock mounts have failed.
The shock mounts that join the back and seat sections together can fail as a result of the rubber perishing or accidental damage. In cases like this I can supply and fit original Herman Miller replacement parts.
Sometimes the plywood shells can fade over the years as a result of sun damage or they may have been scratched and the veneer damaged. Having the veneer repolished can make a huge difference to the appearance.
With age the polypropylene cushion backs can start to fail, sometimes I am able to repair the existing back alternatively, I can supply and fit original Herman Miller replacements.
As an alternative to Eames Chair Reupholstery, an Eames Chair Repair may take the form of repairing or refinishing the existing covers. In this example of a 1970's Time Life Chair the torn leather seat panel was replaced but the scuffs to the existing back panels were repaired and refinished without the need to replace the original leather.
This water damaged Vitra Soft Pad Chair required the seat to be recovered and the leather on the rest of the chair to be refinished.
